Human-cow hybrids in your dairy case?

Who can forget the sight of President Bush getting into a sweaty panic over human-animal hybrids? During his state of the union address in January he warned of "the most egregious abuses of medical research - human cloning in all its forms, creating or implanting embryos for experiments...creating human-animal hybrids..."
Well the Dutch weren't listening and if the FDA fails to remain vigilant you may soon find human-animal hybrids dominating the dairy section of your local supermarket.
The ominously named Dutch firm Pharming has developed a way to attach a human gene to cows so that they produce the human protein lactoferrin in their milk. Lactoferrin can be found in human tears, lung secretions, milk ... all sorts of icky wet stuff inside a normal person. It fights bacteria in the eyes, lungs and gastro-intestinal tract, and helps boost the immune system of infants.
Pharming has already exposed rats to high levels of the mutant protein with no ill effects. Now they've asked the FDA to grant their new protein
"Generally Recognized As Safe" status. Within months the chimeric milk could be in your yogurt, popsicles, sports drinks and snack bars by Christmas, according to Samir Singh, Pharming's Chief Business Officer.
"We believe that now we're at the right stage...to initiate discussions with nutritional companies and other food companies who might be interested in this kind of a product," Singh told Seed Magazine. "There has been some interest from these companies already; we should be in a strong position to commercialize the product later this year or next year."
