Fence greased to keep kids on campus

An Artesia, California high school principal kicked off a firestorm of criticism with his efforts to keep kids on campus two weeks ago. He was trying to keep the kids from running off to join the immigration demonstrations across the state.
Principal Sergio Garcia feels that part of his job is to keep the kids safe and the best way to do that is to keep them on campus. So in the hopes of stopping students from leaving campus, he ordered the chain-link fence surrounding the school grounds be lubed up with wheel-bearing grease.
He warned the students ahead of time that the fence would be greased up on March 27, the day of the protests. Nonetheless,
several students tried to scale the fence, only to come away covered in greasy slime.
Despite Garcia's efforts, more than 300 kids managed to cross the border.
Parents' are kids are furious.
"I just don't think it's appropriate," parent Sylvia Gooden told the ABC Unified School District board during a meeting Tuesday.
District deputy superintendent Mary Sieu supports Garcia's extreme measures.
"I think that at that time, (Garcia) was trying to hold off any other students" from leaving the campus for unsafe areas, Sieu said.
